My Husband--MikeThe love of my life Mike was born a few years before me in the deep dark times after the Second World War. His dad was a Royal Marine who became an admiralty policeman and his mum worked in the local pub. He has a much older half-brother, Doug, from his mum's first marriage. Before Mike was even two years old Doug had joined the R.A.F and moved away, so really he was brought up as an only child like me. He grew up in Plymouth and seemed to have had an almost perfect childhood. Whether this is rose coloured glasses, wishful thinking or reality it is a world apart from my own. He had several close friends with whom he would go playing, fishing and later dancing. His first job was for the furniture department of a local store and this was where he learnt to shift heavy wardrobes and sofas, a trick that came in very handy later in life. He then joined the Naval Dockyard and became an electrician's apprentice. He stayed in the dockyard for several years and only left when he became a single parent. In 1974 his first wife left him, leaving their two daughters with him. Nicola was 4 and Sarah was just a baby and obviously Mike had to give up work to care for them properly. In those days there just weren't the childcare facilities around that would have enabled him to keep his job, thankfully times have changed. He likes music, fishing and reading and looking after me of course. He is getting used to using the computer and internet and has even managed to teach me a few things. Now he hard at work keeping me in the style to which I have become accustomed and I don't see so much of him. He is a proud and loving husband, dad and grandpa and I think I am really rather lucky to have found him. |
